Scripting News: A metadata race? (Scripting News)

Could this be done as an App Engine thing?

Interesting post. The challenge I thing here is going to be cost. Amazon offers a great service but it is expensive and a lot of the web 2.0 services out there are not profitable enough to be able to afford replicating the data.

The OpenSocial data persistence API lets you store per-user data in the social container, and retrieve it for the user and their friends - this is a JSON dictionary (so just what you wanted):

Most sites won't let you store a megabyte though.

Dave, maybe you could create another private room and store user data in XML or JSON or what have you in comments. It'd be cumbersome to set up, but once set up you should be able to call against the FF API and "reconstitute" your user's data in this way. Sounds like one HELL of a hack - but it'd probably work. :)

For now, I'm doing it the non-hack way -- I've got an app running on one of
my servers with a very simple XML-RPC interface. It works. At some point I'd
like to integrate it with the back-end services I'm using at FriendFeed, or
with some other service I replace it with at some point down the road.

Not sure if I am fully on topic here, but since a while I have installed SweetCron on one of my domains. It gets all entries from connected services I choose, and stores them in a database. This way at least I have a backup. I think it's quite sweet indeed.

This is a wonderful opinion. The things mentioned are unanimous and needs to be appreciated by everyone.
