I strongly suspect that if those calls become easily available to the public, the content will change substantially. The dry attempt of P.R. trying to spin the media will turn into yet another attempt to throw out sound bites. But by all means try and get them. The transition period should be very interesting. :-)

Sunshine in this area would be very useful. It would make the reporters more accountable and would make it easier to assess their quality as analysts and filters. Being able to point out bandwagon effects, biases, and missed stories could only improve the quality and effectiveness of coverage.

The calls are really not that interesting. Just a spokesperson telling the media why their candidate is so great, is going to win or did/didn't mean what they said the day before. It's not unlike the spin you hear on TV/radio/web from the surrogates. They do tend to be a bit more data intensive, when appropriate, and they are a bit more "raw" than most on-camera media/campaign interactions. They usually cover a broader range of topics than you'd hear about in the MSM , but, there's not much groundbreaking, game-changing content there.

If the recordings of the conference calls were to be made public then they would be made to be public. You are giving way too much credit to politicians if you think that these calls wouldn't inevitably be self-censored and manipulated by campaign handlers.

The MP3 will only reveal the incompitence of all these politicians...they need the media to filter their ignorance. The Clinton's have got by on this for years. Sounds like Obama is on the ball... I would be willing to bet since Ron Paul's team is the most web-savvy he should have it already since the media doesn't cover shit for him.

I looked at your website, but I'm not sure about the conference. I haven't been going to many conferences in the last couple of years.

I wonder if you might help with this project? I bet some of the radio stations you work with have access to the flow of MP3s that we want access to.

As we look back on this, the fact that we, the voters, are denied a direct connection to these historic times and are left with only the, sometime agenda filled, interpretations of the media leaves me with a somber feeling of being disconnected. What you are doing here, Mr. Winer, is a service and if there is anything we all can do to put the heat on all these campaigns, let us know.
