Wow, there's a big difference betw Obama speaking on his own and when he reads a professionally written speech that he rehearsed. He sounds kind of dumb and nervous and certainly not at all polished in this interview.

Sorry, but in my experience, although Obama gives a terrific rehearsed speech, better than almost anybody, he doesn't do so well in a give-and-take dialog, either. And it seems he's made a point of minimizing those appearances, and has declined to appear with McCain in "town hall" style debates, probably for that very reason.

I'm not sure there's anything to disclose here, unless you're willing to shine the light in both directions.

Its rather funny, eas, that you criticize Palin for "ot wanting to burn any bridges (so to speak) with Alaskans until they no longer serve her ambition", when Obama's entire political career seems based on throwing whoever he wants under the bus once it becomes convenient. (See Jeremiah Wright, et. al.)

Dave: At what point does she seem dumb or unpolished? I fail to see how you think this will change anyone's mind.

Dave, my previous comment wasn't directed at you, but rather anyone who might not have considered how hard it is to do what our politicians do everyday. I've tried to mentally put myself in that position and I'm afraid I wouldn't perform very well. I'm about the same age as Palin and Obama, so I'm impressed by both of them and what they have been able to accomplish.

I'm glad to hear you would do well, by the way. I respect you and what you have been able to accomplish.

At what point did she sound nervous? I thought she sounded pretty good. She sounded like the CEOs I've worked for.

I listened to this a few times, and I think that she did a poor job of communicating, however do not think she was asking such an obvious question.
She clarifies "that VP slot", where "that" is referring to specifically the potential McCain Administration.
I believe that she is asking that question saying that she would only consider being part of an Admin where the VP had a real role, not just a figurehead.
So she is really asking what does McCain's VP do.
I think she has much bigger fish to fry than this.

Yes, I know what the vice-president does, I've even read the history of how the job was designed, and the experiences and opinions of the first VP, John Adams. So, yes, I did better than Governor Palin. Thanks.

Try this:

In your own words, describe the day-to-day job duties of the VP. Beyond the obvious "second in line" stuff, what does the VP do on a day to day basis? No cheating, don't check Wikipedia-- just answer the question off the top of your head, out loud. Pretend you are in front of a camera with the knowledge that a lot of people are going to see you and hear what you say.

OK. Good. How did you do? Better than Governor Palin?

We expect a lot from our elected officials, and we should. But a lot of this parsing of every word under a microscope gets a little old. Otherwise we would just be electing actors who can memorize a script.

Oh wait, we've tried that before...

Yeah, I saw a transcript of this a while ago. Personally, while I understand her not wanting to burn any bridges (so to speak) with Alaskans until they no longer serve her ambition, her comment about wanting to make sure that there was something it it for alaskans if she got the VP job pissed me off. It's VP of the the United States of America, lady, not the great state of Alaska.

I have my doubts that we'll get a chance to see her in that sort of interview again before the election, but if she is, you can be sure she's getting coaching a couple of orders of magnitude above what she had back then.

One "cool" thing about that clip, it has her denying any connection between the dismissal of the public safety commissioner and her ex-brother in law. Since then, it's become quite clear that her ex-brother-in-law was brought up more than once. In other words, it catches her in a clear lie. I'm not sure the American has cared about that sort of thing for a while though.
