Twitter is just one of many ways to gather information. It's important that one have a variety of sources of information in order that they can come to a rational conclusion about an event. A person should also be clear about the reliability and accuracy of the information they get from specific sources and rank those sources accordingly.

Twitter can be used as a news service. However because this is done as a second thought it is not well organized as there is no systematic way to enter news so that it can be easily found and separated from the noise.
Because of this there is no easy and fast way to search for this information.

We have built have integrated a news posting service into our micro blog “Conversations” This ability to post news to the microblog is also integrated into our feed reader and both services post to twitter.
We you search on adelph.us for a news story you will receive results that are from both main stream media as well as from related micro blogs.

I think Twitter is a platform. We certainly saw it supporting journalism yesterday. If Journalism is the message, Twitter can function as the messenger.

If you consider twitter a form of blogging then yes, it can be considered a form of journalism too.

Journalism definition: the collection and editing of news for presentation through the media.

    I think it fits.

Arrington posited that Twitter was "news". He either doesn't know what "news" is, or is trying to pile on to the "news media are dead" meme.

Journalism is another issue altogether. That supposes some conscious effort to take information and turn it into something more informative or newsworthy.

Twitter is information. Unqualified, un-vetted, unsubstantiated information. You trust the information from people you know and you form conclusions about the information from strangers when enough of it combines to make a clear picture. But it is definitely not news and likely not journalism either. Or if it is journalism, it is so only to the extent that YOU are the one performing the journalism by aggregating information and creating something newsworthy out of it for yourself.

Twitter is more like the little blurbs you see at the bottom of the evening news.

rumour and speculation have never been regarded as journalism before and this is not the time to start.
