Scripting News: Losing followers on Twitter? (Scripting News)

  • Randy · 1 year ago
Can't wait to hear where all those connections went... my first thought was somehow inactive accounts or all the spammers had been flushed
  • crowdedfalafel · 1 year ago
have you analyzed which followers were lost? some of them might be bots
  • jeffsonstein · 1 year ago
IMHO, breakinIg the webs of social affiliation which are represented by follower/following lists is a much bigger threat to twitter and related services than any service outages. these webs are the basis of why folks are even on the service.

Twitter "claims" that the number of followers and followees are not reported in "real-time" and they're purging their site of spammers. But what's even more confusing is WHY would you follow spammers. They follow you, not the other way around. There's no excuse for you to lose people YOU are following. The service has gone way downhill since its hey-day after SXSW.

Some people have auto-follow set up. Some people manually auto-follow to repay the favor of being followed, so to speak. The @LPI_Library feed that I follow always does a "hello @____, thanks for following" message for their new followers. I notice that sometimes the Twitter user they are addressing is the same Twitter user that I just blocked because it was a spam account.

There are blogposts on the Twitter Status blog regarding this

My following count dropped from 39 to 34 and my follower count dropped from 39 to 29. Not large numbers but a drop nonetheless. And no action from me either. I'm adding the 5 dropped from the following list myself as soon as I figure out who they are. I already identified one who is a good friend of me. Strange part is he shows up in my People avatar list but not in my following list.

    I've lost about 20 - 25 followers down to 75 from approx. 100.

The conspiracy theorist in me assumes this has something to do with them trying to weed twitter spam followers and something went haywire.

I was able to restore my following list. Turns out my list of People avatars was correct. I used that list to re-add the dropped following people. Granted I am following only 39 people and 5 were dropped, so it was easy for me to do. Only pattern I could see in the dropped following is that each one dropped is someone I started following in the last month. Might be a pattern or might be a coincidence.

Thanks for establishing a conversation here, Dave. I woke up this morning and heard @Sarcomical talking about it, but no one else was. Then when I logged into the web interface of twitter.com, I noticed my follwer numbers went from 200 to 172.

I'm suspicious that perhaps Twitter is removing spammer accounts from the site because I've noticed more spammer types following me over the past couple months. Perhaps they've been taken out of the picture.

My Favorites and Followers stats were at 0 this morning, but Tweets were coming in from some of the folks I was following.

I lost roughly 80 followers and, I think, about the same number of people I was following. I don't follow spammers, so something's really broke on my account, anyway.

The twitter status messages are from over 12 hours ago. I've lost about 20 of the folks that I was following and about 20 of the followers. I still see plenty of spammers in my followers. Epic failure for a service like twitter if they can't get it fixed. With no way to back-up your social graph, you could never trust them again.

I just started Twittering a week or so ago. I lost all my following/followers except for two that I added last night. This included Leo Laporte, Robert Scoble, Patrick Norton and a bunch of information security pros. I'm taking a serious look at FriendFeed.

I also noticed that the list I follow, about 70, is correct while the following count claims I only follow 44.

I hope they followed one of the basic rules of programming - Make a back up.

I've lost about 1/3 of the people I follow and my followers have been cut in half
  • Scobleizer · 1 year ago
Twitter says they've fixed the problem but I'm still down 2,200 followers. Interesting. Over on FriendFeed I'm seeing tons of people complaining about losing not just followers, but people they used to follow. Also, many users have now reached some sort of cap on # of people they can follow.

Here's something else to skew the numbers of actual followers. I don't do twitter, I don't have anything important enough to say, but I follow Twitter RSS feeds (yours is one). I don't show up in the counts, but I'm a follower. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
  • ASicre · 1 year ago
definitely lost 30 or so followers - taking a quick glance all the bots or spammers are gone ie. leslie345. looks as if some of the people I was following are gone as well from 140 is to 108. didn't realize until I read your post.
  • djgallardo · 1 year ago
I lost all the people I was following (on the order of 50) and all but 2 followers of my 10 or so followers. (I know, that's pathetic...) I originally thought it was something I said that caused twitter to disconnect me from everyone--a comment in which I ironically quoted spam I received.

    Dave -

I "follow" you on Twitter, but don't always "click through" every link to a photo - sometimes I don't really care to see some tree or sidewalk somewhere or another. Lots of sites (NY Times, Salon, The Register, etc.) have lots of links - I don't click on all of them, either. Maybe you could factor that in your equation?

I lost all subscribers and subscriptions, but have regained all of them sometime during today... didn't exactly notice when
  • Neil Barnwell · 1 year ago
Yes, my wife and I have both lost followers on Twitter, with the strange exception that we still get SMS updates from those people, and they get them from us. Strange.

I have no idea why the followers go up and down but I'm getting more and more hitter by 'marketeers'

This still seems like a problem. I added a few more followers but they don't show up.

Its very confusing -- how these numbers girate up and down. It's virtually impossible to keep track. (Nwankama)
