Scripting News: Maybe Flickr should have a Twitter? (Scripting News)

  • Sol Young · 1 year ago
Twitxr doesn't support Flickr. If it did I'd seriously consider using them for pic posts.

Adding a Twitter type payload to pic posts (that didn't require a pic) would do wonders for Flickr as a social destination.

Yeah, I think they should pull out all the stops and create a picture-oriented event streamer out of Flickr, esp if Twitxr catches on.

    Hi, I'm Albert from twitxr.com

Just wanted to let ou know that we've released our public API and also added flickr support (pictures get uploaded to your flickr account) You can follow our updates at http://twitxr.com/twitxr

As Alan pointed out one cool thing about twitxr is the geolocation guessing of the iphone native client. With three simple steps (shoot, write, send) you can post a geolocated picture wherever you are.

In my opinion that's our biggest advantage and our key differentiation. It enables us to do cool things like http://twitxr.com/public_timeline/san%20francisco and such

Twitter is the backend, the service to deliver the messages. It's apps like twitterrific that should enable users to photoblog. Add your flickr account to twitterrific and let it upload photos from your MacBook camera to flickr, then post the link to twitter. Or drag and drop a photo to twitterrific and let it do the rest. This would work for me.

From the first paragraph of this post...

objects like pictures and MP3s could hitch a ride on a Twitter message without using up any of he 140 characters

And then what? I oay enough in text to get updates; I don't need the MMS charge as well.

    Keep it simple, stupid.

I agree that Twitxr is not the real solution; much to many steps to take. And I get the feeling they aim to create a second twitter.

For posting my pictures to twitter directly from my phone I use www.mobypicture.com, and lately www.autopostr.com to post directly to twitter.

Yes, absolutely agree that Twitter needs to scale and add payloads. Also absolutely agree that Flickr is on the edge of having its lunch stolen in mobile. But really, in a takeover-offer-paralysed Yahoo!, where are you going to get the dev resources?

For me, the one thing I like most about Twixtr that I don't get elsewhere (inc. Twittergram) that you don't mention is geotagging. Twixtr seems to do a pretty fair job of guesstimating my location with each image i upload from my iPhone. That's very handy. I don't usually bother geotagging my pics cos I don't have a way to do it while shooting on my camera or my cameraphone, and usually can't be bothered when it comes to uploading them to Flickr.

Thanks for the info -- I didn't know it could do that. Haven't tried it with my iPhone yet.

When I first read this post, I wanted to object -- you can already do this with Twitterfeed and a dedicated Flickr tag. I upload photos to Flickr with the tag "post:twitter", Twitterfeed polls once an hour (I think) and can grab up to five posts at a time, and it works more or less perfectly. More important to me, once it's set up, it's 100% automatic and requires no tweaking. What's the need for an additional service?

Then I realized I was sort of missing the point, though I'm still not 100% sure I get what the point actually is. Presumably you're after something that can circumvent the need for messing around under the hood with complicated feed URLs and that's therefore more mainstream-user-friendly. The concept of "payloads" still eludes me somewhat. Why is it better than a tinyurl link inside the update? You lose some of the simplicity and universality of a plain-text-only format, though you add functionality. Is the tradeoff worth it?

    Anyhow, just some reactions.

I think tumblr actually already offers most of this, minus the 140 chars restriction and geotagging. And although many apps made it on to my iphone, the twitxr app seems pretty useless since it is really easy to take a pic and then email it. And there are enough of other utilities to even email songs, so overall tumblr is the winner here for me.
    And a feedmaster too.

Saddest about twitxr is that although they seem to focus on iPhone users, their platform even doesn't auto-recognize Mobile Safari. Ever tried to post on the twitxr site with an iphone? Who made that text field 4 (landscape) screens wide?
Even though beta, especially when releasing a platform with an iPhone specific app, this had to be taken care off before releasing.
Considering the competition is pockettweets for twitter.

This is simply copied model. Is it getting attention because of Martin Varsavsky?

Is FON failing? It seems like lately he is just coping others ideas. TinyURL, hotornot, Twitter ...

At this rate, entrepreneurs should be careful about pitching him or even approaching his friends/partners

Has anyone tried this service - www.nowthen.com ?

Offers something a little different to Twixtr in that you can do it from any camera phone.

Can anyone recommend a service that does everything - struggling to find the perfect one for me at the moment!

personnaly, i'm using Utterz to post both pictures and audio (local call, cheap) automatcly on Flickr. Setup on Utterz makes it so easy that each time I do this, i'm able to post in one only tweet both pix and sound (see: http://twitter.com/damienvanachter/statuses/727...)
My pix are in the same time "backed-up" on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/damienvanachter/22...)

And, finally, i'm able to post a nice widget on my blog (http://www.bloggingthenews.info/blogging_the_ne...)

    my 2 cents

    Something like twitplus.com?

I like twitplus because as well as sending pics to twitter it also lets me securely send files to twitter friends too, without them needing any extra logon or registration (Just receive the file using their twitter username+password).

I've just launched a service that can help on this issue: http://www.flicktotwitt.com
