My brother would have been 61 yesterday, his birday. Instead, he was shot at the age of 25. I miss him so very much. The shooter? Off on a technicality and at large. Very disturbing.

I'm very curious as to how you got such a tour. I toured Folsom with my friend who worked there a few years ago and it was so disturbing. I was told that the men cry at night because they are both cold and hungry. It's hard not to have compassion both ways.

Oh Dave, thank you for this piece. It is interesting how one moment in life can shift our path in life. Choices. These people of San Quentin certainly made theirs. I am struck that you are doing this life experience after just loosing your father. I lost my Dad 5 years ago this upcoming Thanksgiving. We are now members of a life club we never wanted to join for sure. My heart is with you as you move through the journey of mourning, and turning inside to reflect on experience like this... perspective. Thank you for a good read this Sat. morning.

Remarkable post, and particularly resonant for me, having recently lost my own father. Loss and grief did not lock me up - instead I noticed that I'm more sympathetic to others than I was.
