Scripting News: share.opml.org, retired (Scripting News)

  • Bill · 1 year ago
Well I did use the service and just like del.icio.us I liked seeing who was reading what I was reading.. Now can Google and Bloglines provide this same service?? I am going to check out now.. Funny thing is I had linked to the server so now I will have to go and change all those links.. It was my way to share with others (even people who didn't use SYO) what I was reading..

Thanks it was a great idea and I just updated my OPML to..

    Hi

I was looking for that opml file (top100.opml) of the top 100 blogs.

can you just email me the file?

    Regards,
    Ronak.

Too bad! This was a great service before RSS got really popular. What's the traffic like? Perhaps someone would be interested in purchasing the software from you. Maybe you could put up some advertising to help offset the costs?

That's sad. I was using share.opml.org to aggregate my OPML generate by Blogbridge and to get an up-to-date blogroll.

hmmm.. I see this happening often. I mean sites being shut down. I used to share my opml on that site. Hey if only there was someway, I could lend my "excess" storage/bandwidth towards that service, so I could help keep it going.

If there was some way for multiple webmasters to lend there storage and bandwidth for hosting a single site (democratized s3?)

I'm sorry to hear that, Dave. I was a big fan of the idea and I'm planning to have a similar feature integrated into http://lifestrea.ms in the upcoming beta 2 release. Hope to see you there :).

    Cheers,
    Thomas

Ah, just when I was coming to update my OPML list. I use Google Reader as my main RSS reader, so I guess I'll start learning how to use that Discover feature :) I thank the people who ran this site for so long; my most useful RSS feeds came from about 2 minutes of using share.opml.

Could you release the source code that was powering share.opml.org ? We could do the hosting of
the website. I have some spare capacity on one or two machines.

let's hope that other service continue the mission, it is hard to understand that del.icio.us resists to do any progress here for a long while now. especially in the field of podcasting OPML is a way to escape the itunes hegemony.

I'm really sorry to see it go. I often reffered people to my list if they asked what I was reading and I found some of the best feeds looking at similar subscriptions.

Thanks for running it as long as you did. It was great and I'll miss it.

Keep on diggin! Hope to see this service back online soon!

Echoing the other comments, I miss this for podcasting - discovering what my friends are listening to and easily sharing that list in a way that just isn't appropriate with the likes of Google Reader

Stumbled upon this as my Bloglines recommendations never seem to work although I use it daily and I subscribe to about a hundred feeds. Pity this is no longer around.
