We also have 2 'forbidden zones' where we can't go to sleep at all (around an hour after we normally wake up, and around an hour before we go to bed). Applying this to jetlag, if it's a long time change (US to Europe) you should swap the night sleeptime for siesta time. If it's a small one, an hour or two, going to bed early will work less well than waking up early to shift. Usually, I lose some sleep the night before I fly, so I fall asleep as soon as I hit the hotel.  I don't set an alarm, just let myself sleep as much as I need.  So many people take a night flight, get maybe 3 or 4 hours sleep at best, and then stumble around in a haze the first day on the ground.  Imagine all the bad business decisions made as a result.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Coming back, I tend to arrive pretty late, also, but only because I try to book afternoon departures.
