Scripting News: Who do the people of Twitter follow? (Scripting News)

  • Rich Danielson · 6 months ago
It's interesting how few news organizations are on the list.
  • harrisj · 6 months ago
Quick request: could you also add all of the accounts on the Suggested User List that have 0 followers at Twitter Corp?
  • dave · 6 months ago
Yes, I just ran that script. There are 4: Ali_Nejad, AstrobiologyNAI, LIVESTRONGCEO, PEOPLEPets.

I also have a chart of Twitter employees and who is following top developers on the Twitter platform, as well as a lengthy response by @ev to my inquiries. Gotta get around to writing that up, but have had a hard time wrapping my head around it. I imagine this chart you've got will only make that harder. :) I guess that's kind of my (our) job though, huh?

Interesting, Dave. I think this proves, again, that Twitter uses their product in a way that is very different than you, me, or the rest of the tech community. It's very eye opening.
  • dave · 6 months ago
Yes, that's true -- there is no one way to use Twitter. It also might mean they might want to diversify and hire some people with different tastes, so they can better appreciate what they own. Also they might hire a few more graybeards, just a thought. Not all the wisdom of the world is captured by the 20 and 30-somethings. :-)

also, is @twitterapi included? ev sez lots of devs get followed that way
  • ryankuder · 6 months ago
There appear to be at least a few employees who don't follow @ev or @biz. Who doesn't follow the boss?
  • dave · 6 months ago
I thought that was interesting. There's at least one person who follows Alex
Payne who doesn't follow the CEO. That's got to be a career-limiting thing.
(And probably will get remedied quickly.)

You'd have to believe that the people who worked at this company were worth knowing this much about. It can't come as a surprise that some of Twitters top bloviators poll so badly here - actually, a relief. But the big shocker is that with so many "Zach/Zack's" on this list not one of them is me. After all my hard work being a good Twitizen. And who is Jeremy who protects his updates, has 200 total follows - of whom 43 work at Twitter? Actually, I don't really want to know. Thanks.

Dave asked in e-mail about someone who he knew used to be on the SUL but wasn't there now. This led me to make some test accounts to see if there was a difference. Below, without the files I attached, are the results. Dave suggested I post them here for everyone to see.

    ==========================

I just created a new account and the SUL presented during account creation was only 19 people.
I'll list them below and then create another test account and see if the same 19 appear.

Hmmm... I didn't get the 19 during the creation process, figuring that I would get them from the list of people I was following.
    (Test name is hgdfgjui.)
They don't appear on my list.

I followed Beregond. It now shows following 20 but only lists Beregond. While doing this I found that I had already acquired an adult dating spammer, Julia87px. I followed the spam account back. Now following 21, followed by 1, but only the spammer and I show up on the list of people I'm following. I'll check this account this evening and see if anything has changed.

New test account created. Can't use the same methodology, as the avatar and names are not hot links. I copied and pasted the names (NOT Twitter usernames, but names) and bios into Notepad.

After finishing creating account "zserfv" I was following 20 people, and they show on my list of people being followed.
I opened a tab from each name on the list of people zserfv followed, copied and pasted the names to Notepad. At the same time I looked at the bio and verified it was the same as the one collected from the account creation SUL. Twitter account names are below, attachment has names and bios as collected during account creation.

    LIVESTRONGCEO
    InStyledotcom
    robcorddry
    Nightline
    algore

    File is Creation_SUL.txt.

Given that the first test account had an odd number (19) and odd behavior I am guessing that Twitter burped while I was creating the account.

    -----------

New account "vserfz" created. 20 on the creation SUL again. Same methodology. A different list with some overlap. It would appear that a subset of the SUL is offered at creation. Whether this is psuedo-random or there is some weighting scheme I have no idea.

I'd love to see someone track people that come on and off the SUL - I want a flag that tells me they've been on it at least once, or are currently on it.

very cool data Dave. It would be cool if this was built out as a twitter grader type system. A "See if Twitter loves you" type app. Could substitute other companies with larger employee counts that might work better, like Facebook, Google, MSFT, etc.

    Fun Stuff.

It all depends on who is doing the following. A business will follow it's demographics, an individual will follow who they are interested in following, that can be brands, people, celebs, sports starts, etc.
