well I've used both, liked them both and have not real 'passion' for either. this said, I was recently looking at google sites and the groups integration was leading me to go more that direction, but after @Erhan Erdogan comment on FriendFeed, I think I'll definitely have to give that http://grou.ps site a good look.

I love Feedburner's email service. It takes an RSS feed and sends an email out once a day with all of the items. May not work for you, but it's completely hands off.

I subscribed to the NewsJunk RSS feed and noticed that many items duplicate what's already in the original source RSS feeds I've subscribed to. The difference is the NewsJunk items typically contain less information than what's in the original item, making the NewsJunk RSS feed less than optimal. The shortened items are necessary for Twitter, of course, but it would be great if the RSS and emailed versions could at least contain the content published in each site's RSS feed. One serious annoyance I have with Google Groups: your email address is your ID. Fine, except in the following scenario:
1. You have multiple email addresses.
2. Email address A is your Google Groups login.
3. Someone sends an invitation to join a group to email address B.
4. You have to create a Google login for email address B.

You can add social networking features on top of your Yahoo groups by using Grouply. They do plan to add Google support. One good thing about Grouply is that members who want the extra Web 2.0 etc features can have them if they want them.

I have used both (both as a member and as a board mod) and I prefer the Google groups many times over. Are you looking for people to randomly stumble across your group or would people come to your site looking specifically for your group?

Google Groups is A+ in my book. I've been a subscriber to a half dozen groups now for some time. Yahoo is OK, but Google seems 'cleaner' to me somehow. Perhaps I'm caving to its 'newer-and-shinier' factor? From a follower ... Cheers, Allison

I would definitely go with Google Groups. I recently had to migrate a few lists from Yahoo to Google Groups because of problems with spam. I haven't had any problems with Google Groups.

Dave, is there some sort of HTML script that you can pop into your blog to keep track of feed statistics such as number of subscribers? I'm talking about an alternative to Feedburner's service that you can implement with a little more work. Note superlativity of 'little'. :D

Google Groups is something me and my class are using to communicate and share information - news forms a small subset of the stuff that goes around.
The idea of moving to a group model has great benefits, especially if you're using GG! Or, wait, am I just a Google fanboy? It's fast, simple, easy to set up, has strong privacy controls, and offers great ways to control spam both from sources within and without newsjunkies on the group. It's really simple to attach stuff to emails and send it out through GMail, and besides, if you tie it in with Google Apps, you have a whole new level of community identification:
Every member with more than 500+ intelligible (that means syntax error-less) posts gets an @scriptmonkey.com address! Now wouldn't that be something worth posting for? This way, you can post the stories, and have dedicated discussion threads that run through every line of code! Let's hope we don't bring Google down in the process!

I haven't had much experience with Yahoo! except to say that it's clunky and has too many banner ads cluttering up the whole thing.

Has the possibility of a Wiki-model been explored? Or, wait, is there one already.?

You know you could almost do it with FriendFeed but they don't do anything with the descriptions on the NewsJunk feed, which is really unfortunate. I've sent emails and posted it as a feature request on their site, I've never even gotten a response. Which is really strange cause they used to be incredibly responsive.

Also as a disclaimer, I realized shortly after posting this that it may be an application for Switch-A-Bit, and I've forwarded the request. I'm a shareholder in the company, so I have an extra incentive there. I also have more influence on them, for example, I'd like to share the subscriber list, in case I'm not happy with their service, I'd not be locked in. Neither Yahoo or Google offer that.

A few months ago I had to start a group site for a class project collaboration. I wanted to use yahoo groups so I tried to create a new group. After entering all the requisite information, it said there was a server problem and to try again tomorrow. I repeated the steps the next day and I still had an error. At that point I swore off creating any Yahoo groups and decided I would use Google groups for projects, which I have been quite happy with.

Couple of reasons: 1. I didn't know the feature existed. 2. In general I don't want to support Feedburner. They centralize a technology that's MUCH better decentralized, and they add garbage to feeds that I have to remove. I'll do my own feeds, it's too bad so many people use FB, I'm never going to be one of them.

Go with Google. Yahoo is too unstable right now. You never know what they will close or move next. One day you'll go to the site and find it doesn't exist anymore.... Not good.

Why not use FeedBurner's free Email Alerts feature that will email out your blog/RSS posts to everyone who has subscribed to your Email Alerts?
